[h=1]Hiked charges deter motorists from parking[/h] Sidharatha Roy| tnn | Nov 10, 2017, 01:03 IST NEW DELHI: The parking lotnext to Nehru Place metrostation is usually packed with cars and two-wheelers in the morning, but on Thursday it bore a considerably desolate look. However, a cacophony could be witnessed at the entry gate with motorists arguing with parking attendants over the hiked parking charges. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) hiked charges at all its parking lots by four times on Thursday to discourage use of private vehicles as per a decision taken in a meeting chaired by lieutenant governor Anil Baijal on Wednesday. As a result, car users had to shell out Rs 80 instead of Rs 20 for the first six hours, while two-wheeler owners had to pay Rs 40 instead of Rs 10. Most motorists were caught unawares and parking attendants had to inform everyone coming there about the hike. That, however, didn't help avoid arguments between those managing the parking lots and motorists. "I got to know about the hiked charges when I came to park my motorbike. Travelling in metro already costs me Rs 110 every day and if I have to shell out Rs 60 for parking not much of my meagre salary will be left," said Ashish Sharma, a private firm employee who parks his motorbike daily at Dilshad Garden station before taking the metro. Many commuters said that hiking parking charges defeats the purpose of fighting pollution. "For two-wheeler riders like me, a ride to my office on my bike will cost the same as parking it at the station and taking the metro. This way, I will be adding to the pollution rather than helping in reducing it," said Akash Verma, another commuter. Shankar Singh, the parking supervisor at Nehru Place station, said that usually the lot has to closed by 11am as the place becomes packed with cars. "Today, the number of cars parked here has gone down by 60%. This is despite most people being unaware of the increase in parking charges. The numbers will go further down tomorrow," he said. [h=2]"Many people turned back after coming to know of the hiked parking charges. Usually 500 two-wheelers are parked here every day, but today there were only 350. The number of cars reduced from 65 to 45," said Bhupendra Kumar Shukla, parking supervisor at Hauz Khas metro station.[/h] Bhupesh Kumar, a sales manager, said, "I need to park my car for just two hours. Why will I pay Rs 80 for such a short duration? I would rather take my chances and park it on the roadside."
