[h=1]How Magenta Line will bring Delhi closer by bridging south-west gap[/h] Sidharatha Roy| TNN | Updated: Mar 21, 2018, 01:18 IST NEW DELHI: With the extension of the Magenta Line to Janakpuri in west Delhi from Kalkaji Mandir currently, south Delhi areas such as Vasant Vihar, Munirka, IIT, Greater Kailash and Chirag Dilli will finally have access to Delhi Metro services from early April. While the section between Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir, opened in December last year, had closed the gap between south-east Delhi and Noida, the opening of the entire line will create a much-needed south-west corridor. The work on the corridor is now complete save for some finishing touches in a few stations. Trial runs are going on and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is getting the clearances for the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety to carry out a safety inspection, possibly in the coming fortnight. These were confirmed by a DMRC spokesperson on Tuesday. The Magenta Line will considerably reduce travel time between west Delhi and south Delhi and link the capital to NCR hubs in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Noida. For instance, traveling between Hauz Khas and Janakpuri West, which requires a train change at Rajiv Chowk and takes close to 55 minutes, will become half an hour shorter when the new line starts running. For the lakhs of residents of west Delhi, one of the most populous regions of the capital, the only lifeline connecting them to the rest of the city is the Blue Line (Dwarka Sector 21-Noida City Centre/Vaishali), which involves travelling up to Rajiv Chowk and then changing trains if they want to visit any other part of Delhi-NCR. The opening of the Magenta Line's Janakpuri West-Kalkaji Mandir will connect heavily populated areas like Palam, Dabri, Mahavir Enclave, Sagarpur and Dashrathpuri. "We expect commuters to save up to 25 minutes of travel time when the entire Magenta Line starts running," said a senior DMRC official. "The corridor will also act as a feeder for the currently functioning Blue Line because both the originating stations on this corridor — Janakpuri West and Botanical Garden — are important stations for the Blue Line." The Magenta Line will also be a boon to those flying by budget carriers since Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International airport will have a station of its own on the corridor. At the moment, flyers have to take a shuttle from the Aerocity station of the Airport Express Line to reach the terminal. Apart from providing connectivity, state-of-the-art trains and signalling technology in the corridor, DMRC has also gone the extra mile to make the new line one of its greenest ones. The corporation has executed extensive landscaping at many stations, such as at Janakpuri West interchange station, with large sections dedicated to trees. DMRC has also revamped public parks near the corridor to turn them into vibrant public spaces. During the constructing of the underground stations at Janakpuri West and Dabri Mor, DMRC took over parks located at C-2 Block and Narang Colony. It will not only now restore these, but also equip them with facilities like an open gym, badminton courts, children's play areas, amphitheatre and gazebos before handing them back to the residents. [h=1]BJP to join all-party meet on sealing[/h] AlokKNMishra| TNN | Updated: Mar 21, 2018, 02:32 IST NEW DELHI: With chief minister Arvind Kejriwal calling an all-party meeting on Wednesday over the sealing issue, BJP, Congress and AAP are set to share a common platform after months of blaming each other. Representatives of the SC-appointed monitoring committee, which is carrying out sealing in Delhi on directives of the apex court, are likely to attend the meeting. "All cabinet ministers, led by the CM himself, will attend the meeting. Members of all parties have been invited," a government official said. BJP, which skipped the previous such meeting, has decided to join it this time. "We will go to the meeting because it's important to talk to the committee. We will try to find solutions through discussion," leader of opposition Vijender Gupta said. He claimed that "Delhi BJP had recently suggested the Delhi government to meet the monitoring committee, which it should have done by now". Sources said Delhi BJPpresident Manoj Tiwari could also attend the meet. Delhi Congress has already expressed its desire to be a part of the meeting. The party had attended the all-party meeting held at Kejriwal's residence earlier. Last week, Kejriwal had written to the monitoring committee seeking an appointment for the council of ministers. He later told the assembly that he would like all parties to attend it. The government has maintained that only an ordinance brought in by the Centre or a Bill to amend the existing laws could stop the sealing drive. [h=1]Action against 39 properties in Sainik Farms[/h] TNN | Updated: Mar 21, 2018, 02:33 IST NEW DELHI: South Delhi Municipal Corporation carried out demolitions against 39 properties for unauthorised construction at Sainik Farms in the past five months. Senior officials from the south civic body claimed that the demolition action taken against properties were minor in nature as this was mostly extension work done by the owners. As per directions of the Delhi high court, there is a complete ban on construction activities in Sainik Farms since 2001. As per the orders, even entry of construction materials in the area is banned and SDMC is supposed to monitor that regularly. "There is a complete ban on construction activities at Sainik Farms and we have been monitoring the area regularly. A few owners have raised the boundary wall or extended the property by constructing an additional room," said a senior official from SDMC. SDMC claimed that in a bid to keep a check on unauthorised construction, the civic body has taken various measures. [h=1]Green Budget to look beyond quick fix[/h] Ambika Pandit| TNN | Updated: Mar 21, 2018, 01:46 IST NEW DELHI: The 2018-19 budget, to be presented by Delhi government on Thursday, is set to see a comprehensive action planunder the head of "green budget" to combat pollution. With a dedicated budgetary allocation, Delhiities can hope for measures that will deliver long-term impact, sustainability and an imminent shift to clean energy alternatives. According to sources, the shift to "green alternatives" is proposed to be backed by "incentives". Through this action plan, the government was aiming for a "visible impact" over the next two years, sources said. The exercise is learnt to have brought together five departments — environment, transport, industries, energy and PWD — for ideating and planning. Many of the nearly 20 proposals discussed are likely to find space in the budget. The overall budget outlay is expected to be much higher than last year and the green budget components are likely to get adequate financial support. The city can expect focus on introduction of electric buses by early next year. A commitment towards bringing a citywide electric vehicle policy is likely to be firmed up later this year. The Arvind Kejriwal government was strongly of the view that there should be focus on electricity driven public transport, sources said. The Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System is working on the subject and a team has already visited China, which is leading the way on the use of electric buses. The focus, sources said, was on looking at beyond quick-fix solutions. "Given Delhi's struggle with growing pollution, the government is looking at visible impacts and each proposal comes with a timeframe, estimation of the tangible impact, costs involved and difficulties expected during implementation," a source said. For instance, one of the five departments which are part of the exercise is industries. Industrial units in Delhi still use prohibited fuels, such as furnace oil. The government now wants to explore a shift to piped natural gas. The budget may also incentivise the shift to cleaner mode of energy for such establishments. Also, PWD's ambitious plan to fight dust through end-to-end landscaping along all roads is being pitched as a green solution. Every landscaping component, including the street furniture, plants and trees, will be chosen on the basis of their ability to combat pollution. The green budget is expected to focus primarily on air pollution and introducing measures that can help reduce carbon emissions. With alarmingly high pollution levels in the capital raising serious health concerns, the Aam Aadmi Party government earlier this year decided to come up with a multi-department action plan. "Scientific studies on the effects of air pollution on children in Delhi conclude with certainty that, for many, their health will be compromised for the rest of their lives," it was stated in a note from the deputy CM Manish Sisodia's office to ministers and department heads earlier this year when it was decided to introduce the "green budget" component. [h=1]Dust from roads to be used for construction: EDMC[/h] [h=2]To clean the major arterial roads in east Delhi, the EDMC has purchased four mechanical sweeping machines. These have the technology to suck in dust, which will then be released at the construction and demolition waste plant in Shastri Park and used for construction[/h] Written by Abhinav Rajput | New Delhi | Published: March 21, 2018 3:25 am The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) has planned to convert dust collected from roads, using mechanical sweeping machines, into materials used for construction of buildings. To clean the major arterial roads in east Delhi, the EDMC has purchased four mechanical sweeping machines. These have the technology to suck in dust, which will then be released at the construction and demolition waste plant in Shastri Park and used for construction. For the purpose, EDMC commissioner Ranbir Singh said the plant's capacity will be increased from 500 metric tonnes to 1,000 metric tonnes. "Earlier, dust particles collected after cleaning roads would be released in the dhalaos. But when soil, sand and other dust particles get mixed with other waste particles, it reduces the efficiency of the waste-to-energy plant. Hence, it became important not to release the dust particles at the dhalaos," Singh said, adding that now, the dust particles will be used to make marbles, bricks, soil, stones, etc. The corporation also plans to install GPS devices and cameras on mechanical sweeping machines to record the condition of the roads before and after sweeping. "The GPS device will also help track the movement of the machine so that there is no dereliction of duty," he said. He added that these machines function in a way that the dust cleared from the roads does not get dispersed in the air — a problem that is rampant with manual sweeping. The mechanical sweeping machines will also sprinkle water on the roads. "The work will be done at night," officials said. National Capital Region Set To Expand Areas around national capital Delhi were included under the fold of the national capital region (NCR) to enable the city deal with the growing migrant population and other things that a city needs as a result of a substantial increase in its population. Currently, parts of 13 districts of Haryana spread in an area of 25,327 square kilometre (skm), seven districts of Uttar Pradesh covering an area of 13, 560 sqm and two districts of Rajasthan occupying an area of 13,447 sqm form the NRC, apart from Delhi's total geographical area of 1,483 sqm. In December last year, UP's Shamli district was inducted into the NCR, taking the total number of districts under the region to 23. The ever-rising increase in migrant numbers is likely to cause further expansion of the NCR. According to Housing Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, the Centre is considering proposals from two states to include more cities under the NCR fold. The minister recently told the Lok Sabha that UP has submitted a proposal to include Mathura, Saharanpur, Aligarh and Bijnor in the NCR. Rajasthan, on the other hand, is pitching for Jhunjhunu to come under the NCR fold. In case the Centre decides to give a go-ahead to the states' plans, the proposition would turn out to beneficial for both the parties. There is certainly a brand upgrade for the cities that become part of the NCT. As soon as new districts get that tag, land rates in the areas would shoot up in anticipation, new projects to improve infrastructure would be planned and new real estate projects would be announced. Apart from getting a brand update, the cities that are part of the NCR receive funds at "attractive" interest rates from the National Capital Region Planning Board (NCRPB) for infrastructure development The extension of the NCR limits also limits more options for affordable homebuyers and more land for builders available for development.
