Let's break free from coal, says green brigade TNN | Updated: Mar 21, 2018, 02:30 IST NEW DELHI: Environmental activists across the capital held a protest outside Badarpur thermal power plant on Tuesday morning asking the ministry of environment, forest and climate change to enforce the National Clean Air Programme at the earliest. The protesters, supported by Greenpeace India, also sought a sector-wise breakup of how a 35% reduction in emissions is planned over the next three years. Carrying banners that read "Break free from coal, clean air now", the activists said stationary sources like power plants need to be looked at as they are major contributors to air pollution. "We have allowed ourselves enough to become the victims of air pollution, something that can be easily mitigated by taking concrete and right steps. We are here because we need to see change, which is only possible if the government's actions towards resolving the issue are discussed on public platforms so that we know where we are heading," said Ritesh Dwivedi, an activist at the protest. Airpocalypse II, a recent report released by Greenpeace India, had highlighted that over 80% of cities where air quality was monitored are severely polluted. This impacts 47 million children across the country. tnn https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...w/63388552.cms

Wazirabad Bridge To Shut For Repair; Traffic Snarls Await Delhiites Delhiites do not seem to be getting respite from long traffic jams as the Public Works Department is picking up major roads for repair one after the other. After the Lajpat Nagar Flyover and Shahdara Flyover, it is now the Wazirabad Bridge that will be shut for repair on March 25 for a period of three months. Although the Delhi Traffic Police has informed commuters about the possible diversions, the repair work is expected to affect over two lakh commuters. The work The repair will be carried out in three phases and in a time span of three months. In the first phase, the cantilever portion will be repaired. This includes pavements and cycle track from Khajuri side to Civil Lines. For this, one carriageway of the bridge will be closed. Impacted areas Reports suggest that the shutting down of the Wazirabad Bridge, which is a lifeline for many, will impact the residents of areas such as Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Karawal Nagar, Gokulpuri and Nand Nagari. This bridge works as the key connection for those who live in these areas and have to cross the River Yamuna to travel to other parts of the city. While the repair work is on, commuters are expected to face heavy traffic jams on the Wazirabad Road, the Yamuna Pusta Road and the nearby Outer Ring Road. Diversions According to Delhi Traffic Police, those coming to Delhi from Ghaziabad could follow certain alternative routes. "Heavy vehicles destined for Haryana may use Loni-Baghpat route. The heavy vehicles destined for Delhi may take Mohan Nagar-Link Road (Vaishali)-the National Highway 24 (NH-24) to enter Delhi as Shahdara flyover is also under repair," the city traffic police was quoted as saying in a PTI report. Light motor vehicles coming from Khajuri towards Wazirabad could use the Pontoon Bridge while vehicles coming from Wazirabad towards Khajuri could use the available single carriageway of Wazirabad Yamuna Bridge. Also, the Delhi Police has completely restricted the entry of heavy vehicles on the bridge until it is fully repaired. Delay adds to the woes If the deadlines would have been met, there would have been no traffic woes that the residents will face now. The Signature Bridge, a project that was to be a replacement for the Wazirabad Bridge, lies incomplete. The project that was to connect Wazirabad to Delhi across the River Yamuna is known for a dynamically shaped pylon consisting of two inclined columns. While the project looks like a construction marvel on its website, in reality it remains a structure that lies in middle of work. It was in 2010 before the Commonwealth Games that the project missed its deadline. Since then, it has missed five deadlines, the most recent being in November 2017. Later, the Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation said that the work on this project cannot be completed before April 2018.

"We are going to thread 26 programmes and schemes of Transport, Power, Environment and PWD departments for devising a unified system of pollution control to bring down levels of different pollutants," he said. Sisodia announced 50 per cent concession in registration of CNG cars, and said solar panels will be installed over 16 km cycle track. [h=1]North Delhi civic body will ask RWAs to collect property tax[/h] Only around 4.4 lakh people actually pay property tax in the densely-populated areas falling under the civic body's jurisdiction. The primary reasons for the poor collection are acute shortage of field staff and reluctance of residents to pay the taxesParas Singh | TNN | March 22, 2018, 14:00 IST NEW DELHI: North corporation has decided to rope in RWAs to increase the numbers of properties falling under the tax net from the next financial year. A proposal was cleared by the standing committee on Wednesday wherein RWAs registered with Delhi government and with a valid registration number will play the role of property tax collection agents. "The civic agency will soon invite RWAs to organise tax collection camps, educate residents and urge people to pay their pending property tax. In return, they will get 3% of the total collections," a senior official from the finance department told TOI. However, the commission can only be utilised by RWAs for the welfare of the colony or area. Only around 4.4 lakh people actually pay property tax in the densely-populated areas falling under the civic body's jurisdiction. The primary reasons for the poor collection are acute shortage of field staff and reluctance of residents to pay the taxes. The civic body also cleared the property tax amnesty scheme for financial year 2017-18 extending the benefit of waiver of 100% interest and penalty on outstanding tax to all areas. Mayor Preety Agarwal said, "This waiver was earlier available to only unauthorised colonies. The last date to avail this waiver is March 31. All property tax offices will remain open on all Saturdays of March between 10am and 5pm." [h=1]Crop burning: NGT fines Delhi govt Rs 2 lakh[/h] TNN | Updated: Mar 21, 2018, 02:36 IST NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Tuesday rapped the Delhi government for not filing its action plan on air pollution with respect to crop burning and imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on the government. A bench headed by judicial member Justice Jawad Rahim asked AAP why the affidavit did not have signatures of the chief secretary, despite directions given earlier. "If we have issued a direction, please comply with it. Who has filed the affidavit? Is he higher in rank than the chief secretary?" the bench said. The directions came when the counsel appearing for Delhi government had informed NGT that the affidavit submitted had been signed by the joint director of agriculture. "Delhi has not filed the action plan. We decline the affidavit filed by the state government. Our order clearly directed that the chief secretary had to file it and there cannot be any exception to it," the bench said.
